Quicktime - Live Streaming

To set up a QuickTime live stream, follow these steps.

  1. Download and install the Quicktime Broadcaster from here. This is a free application available from Apple, and requires Mac OS X 10.1.5 or better. You will need to have a firewire-enabled camera connected to your computer for video, or one of a variety of input devices (firewire camera, built-in mic, USB audio input) for audio.

  2. If you do not see the "Audio | Video | Network" button set in the top right part of the window, click on "Show Details." Click on the "Network" settings.

  3. The following screenshot gives an example of what should be in the "Network" fields:
    QuickTime Broadcaster Screenshot
Hostname: This is the address of the server, and must be "real.cc.uga.edu:7071".

File: This should take the form "/username/filename.sdp". Note that the filename must include the .sdp extension. Notice that as you fill in the host name and file fields, the URL under "Location" on the left side of the window changes. This will be the URL that you use to access the stream once it goes live.

Username: This should be your username on the account.

Password: This should be account password. This is the password you specified when you requested an account. You should be able to accept the default settings for both "Buffer Delay" and "Broadcast over TCP."

In the "Annotations" section, you should, at minimum, enter a title, especially if users are going to be accessing the stream from QuickTime Player. QuickTime Player will use the title as the window title. The rest is optional.

  4. Once you have all the Audio, Video, and Network settings the way you want them, click on "Broadcast" to start your stream. If successful, your preview window should say "Broadcasting."

  5. The URL for your stream will be "rtsp://real.cc.uga.edu:7071/username/" plus the filename you specified. For example, using the same filename as described above, the URL would be "rtsp://real.cc.uga.edu:7071/imas/live_demo.sdp"
