RealMedia - Live Streaming

To set up a RealMedia live stream, follow these steps.

  1. Download and install the RealProducer Basic here. See the documentation with the software for more information on system requirements and methods for connecting recording devices. The following instructions describe how to send a live stream using Helix Producer Basic (version 11).

  2. Once you have RealProducer running and your capture device connected to your computer, you will need to specify the audio and video sources. Click on the "Devices" radio button, and use the pulldown menus to indicate where the streams are coming from. Once these are set, you should see a preview on the left-hand side of the window.

  3. Next, you will need to specify the server settings. Go to "File" and select "Add Server Destination...". The following screenshot gives an example of what should be in the "Server Destination" window: RealProducer Screenshot
The "Destination name" is for your own reference, and can be anything you like.

The "Stream name" is the name of the file that will form the last part of the URL you access. This name should not include any spaces or special characters, and should end in a ".rm" file extension. In addition, you should include your username as a prefix to the filename. For example, if your username were "jdoe" and you wanted to call the file "liveStream", the filename would be "jdoe_liveStream.rm". This is important to ensure that there are no filename conflicts between different streams.

The "Broadcast method" should be set to "Push, Account-Based Login (Helix Server)".

The "Server address" should be "real.cc.uga.edu".

Accept the default settings for "Path," "Port/Port range," and "Transport."

In the "Username" and "Password" fields, enter the username and password you requested for the account.

  4. In addition to specifying the source and server settings, you may also want to adjust the output for your particular audience. To do this, click on the "Audiences" button and make adjustments as necessary for your circumstances. You may also want to specify a title, author, and copyright for your clip by clicking on the "Clip Information" button.

  5. Once everything is ready to go, click on "Encode" to start your stream.

  6. The URL for your stream will be "rtsp://real.cc.uga.edu/broadcast/" plus the filename you specified (or "http://real.cc.uga.edu/ramgen/broadcast/" plus the filename). For example, using the same filename as described above, the URL would be "rtsp://real.cc.uga.edu/broadcast/jdoe_liveStream.rm"
