Windows Media - Encoding

Using Windows Media Encoder to encode a Windows Media file:

To encode files for Windows Media you will first have to download and install the Windows Media Encoder. See the documentation with the software for more information on system requirements and methods for connecting recording devices. The following instructions describe how to encode a file using Windows Media Encoder.

  1. Open Windows Media Encoder.

  2. Choose Convert A File from the New Session Wizards

  3. Find the file you wish to convert to be your source filenew session dialoge

  4. Under “How do you want to distribute your content?”, choose Windows Media Server (streaming)

  5. Choose the rates you wish to encode the file.

    Refer to the following table to select the appropriate rates (audiences) for Windows Media.

    Recommended Windows Media Rates
    Dial-up 28 kbps or 43 kbps
    Cable/DSL 148 kbps or 282 kbps
    LAN 340 kbps or 548 kbps

  6. When you click finish, the program runs through two passes to encode the file. This may take a few minutes.

  7. Your file is now ready to be uploaded to the streaming media server.
